Village of Sciences Ethics Procedure

The Village of Sciences Ethics Committee is responsible for evaluating the actions of all persons participating in Village of Sciences activities within the framework of the Village of Sciences Ethical Values, regardless of position or title. All behaviors that do not comply with academic principles and values; that involve violence and discrimination against animals, plants, persons, communities, and humanity are considered within the responsibility of the Village of Sciences Ethics Committee. Other incidents occurring outside the Village of Sciences Campus but which may affect the environment and relationships of the Village of Sciences may also be brought to the agenda of the Ethics Committee.

The Village of Sciences Ethics Committee,

  • Aims to prevent violence, harassment, and discrimination based on gender, age, religion, language, belief, marital status, health status, disability, national/ethnic/local origin, citizenship/immigration/refugee status.
  • Defines gender not within the heteronormative binary system, but within the multi-layeredness and intersectionality of sexual orientations and gender identities.
  • Accepts concepts such as violence, harassment, and discrimination in their broadest scopes – physical, psychological, verbal, symbolic, digital, and economic.
  • Aims to organize activities that strengthen social awareness on these issues outside the Village of Sciences Campus as well.
  • Committee members hold regular meetings with agendas of risk assessment and precaution taking. It shares the Village's Ethical Principles and committee activities with all components of the Village of Sciences at appropriate intervals.
  • Ensures that security and health emergency hotlines and Ethics Committee contact information are announced on boards in common areas within the Village Campus, on the website, and on social media communication channels.
  • Acts as an intermediary in establishing non-violent and transparent communication and dialogue between parties in all kinds of applications made to the Ethics Committee.
  • Informs the parties regarding the committee's work and evaluation process. When necessary, establishes an impartial sub-commission appropriate to the subject of the incident.
  • The committee and sub-commissions conduct their work with care for confidentiality and privacy, in a way that protects the parties against retaliation.
  • Informs the relevant persons and institutions about the decisions taken as a result of the completion of the evaluation of the incident – as soon as possible.

With these procedural rules, the Village of Sciences undertakes to provide a non-violent Village environment where democratic scientific principles and the life dignity of all living things are respected, and where feelings of trust, peace, and equality take root.

Village of Sciences Ethics Committee
